Plant populations can keep descending for generations depending on
genes. Different genes express different phenotypes. In certain cases,
trangenosis, mutation and recombination might happen. To meet the requirement
of humanbeings, some native species are selected and acclimatized to become
cultivatedspecies. Thus, the genetic backgrounds might be narrowed and the
resistances to diseases and insects and drought tolerance might be reduced. It
becomes very important for germplasm collection and conservation to facilitate
to introduce the desirable genes for breeding. The conservation of forage
germplasms conducted at the Taiwan Livestock Research Institute has been financially
supported by Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan and Department of
Agriculture and Forest, Taiwan Province for many years. The aims of the work
are to maintainand enlarge the genetic diversity of forage species and evaluate
them for utilization or for breeding materials. The monograph of "Forage
Germplasms of Grasses and Legumes in Taiwan" including Gramineae 54
species and Leguminosae 39 species widely grown in Taiwan is written in both
Chinese and English. Itcan provide information for agricultural workers,
scientists and botanic interesters to learn and identify the forang species.
There are still some limitations in the text of the book, more advices are
highly appreciated.
We greatly appreciate the following scientists and researchers to help
write and provide informations: Mr. R. H. Buu, Mr. S. H. Chang, Dr. Y. K.

extend thanks to Drs. H. F. Huang and C. S. Kuo for reviewing the contents. We
also sincerely appreciate Mr. M. H. Lee designing the cover and Ms. S. P. Hsu,
